Books We’re Loving: Wreckage by Emily Bleeker
Any Moxy mom like myself will take five moments here or there to scroll down her Kindle or Nook recommendations to see if there is a new “hot” book out there that needs to be read, or at least skimmed before conversations about it arise at the local Starbucks, play group or work place water cooler. Gone Girl, The Girl On the Train, The Da Vinci Code and Atonement are all books that come to mind when we think of surprise twists, shocking endings and that satisfying feeling that manifests when we have read “the hit” book of the moment. Wreckage by Emily Bleeker is poised to become that very book within the next few months; it is already listed as a Kindle First selection and I myself have heard some other mommies buzzing about the novel. As a fan of books of the moment, mysteries and a devotee of the television show L O S T, I was more than happy to delve into Wreckage and see what I thought of our two survivors, Lily and David.
Part mystery, part love story and part survival guide, the book move at a razor sharp pace, utilizing the full dramatic effect of flashbacks and dual perspectives and points of view. What could easily become confusing or tedious instead becomes quick, intriguing and exciting at the hands of Ms. Bleeker. We know our dual narrators are liars; they admit that from the start. Their lies, while hidden from their respective spouses are relatively easy for the reader to spot within the first fifty pages. How then does the book become more than a post L O S T bargain bin special? It is because Ms. Bleeker works admirably hard to capture and hold our interest; right from the start. Yes, Lily and David are lying. Yes, we can see what their lies are. However, in order to understand and dare I say appreciate their lies, we have to discover why they are lying. And, therein lies, no pun intended, the true heart of the novel, the black box amongst the wreckage, as it were.
Ms. Bleeker, herself a mother of four and a former educator, began her career as an author after establishing a writing workshop for her students. While I am certain the workshop was beneficial to the students, it was perhaps even more beneficial to her, as she gained the courage she needed to create and share with the world the characters she has created in this L O S T island filled with fear, heart ache and love.
For those of us looking for a page turner that holds our interest after a long day at work or an even longer day chasing after the kids, Wreckage does not disappoint. So, I recommend grabbing or downloading a copy and being the first to have the buzz on the new trendy novel for all of us Moxy Moms!
