Our Chat With Elizabeth Chambers Hammer
We are so excited to share with you some insight into the fabulous mind of Elizabeth Chambers Hammer!
1) Tell us about your involvement in the Human Rights Foundation as well as your bakery.
I’m the chief correspondent for the HRF and founder and owner of BIRD bakery. Both positions require many of the same skill sets but the two jobs are also drastically different in many ways.
2) What inspired you?
I was inspired by my mother who is an amazing cook, baker and business woman and by my grandmother, Maureen Carnathan. My grandmother was a very fabulous, very british woman and she owned an incredibly successful catering company in San Antonio. For years after she passed away, people would call my mom and ask for her recipes and I knew if we opened in SA we would have quite a few customers who would be happy to taste many of the wonderful desserts and creations that they missed so much.
3) You’re a busy lady! How do you find time to juggle everything?
I have an incredible team and a wonderful right hand, whom I call my work wife. So much of getting it all done and staying inspired in the process comes down to time management and having procedures in place. Compartmentalization also makes it easier to switch gears!
4) Tell us about your family!
Our family is growing! Our daughter, Harper is 3 months old and changing so much each day. Every day is such a gift and we’re enjoying every moment of it.
5) Advice for working moms?
My advice for working moms is to know that your best is good enough. It’s easy to feel guilty when you’re working and not with your children and vice versa. I take my daughter with me as much as possible but when I have to be away from her for work, I make a conscious effort to focus and be in the moment.
6) Best advice someone gave you?
There has been so much good advice. The one I go to often is that you can have one conscious thought at a time, so make it a good one. That, and always be grateful-gratitude goes a long way and has a way of keeping things in perspective.
7) Favorite thing to do when you have free time?
So many things…bake, hike, yoga, read, cook, pilates. I also love to entertain. We have dinner parties and friends over for dinner or brunch at least three or four times a week when we’re in town.
8) What’s next for Elizabeth?
We’re currently working on the expansion of our San Antonio location and planning to open in Dallas early next year. We’re also introducing shipping and re-launching our website this month. In terms of the HRF, we’re heavily focused on North Korea at the moment and prepping for the Oslo Freedom Forum, which will take place in the Spring.
